Joseph Ayers is an artist, educator, and curator. These three practices continually inform his ideas and work. Much of his personal inspiration wells from growing up in rural Gulf Coast Florida working as the son of a shrimper and handyman, and from his experiences serving in the United States Air Force. Following his service, he began to study Fine Art at the University of New Orleans with a focus in digital media, and afterward pursued a Masters of Fine Art at Hunter College City University of New York with a focus in Combined Media. As an MFA student Ayers began making connections with his past through art making, and naturally focused on relationships he witnessed between the rapidly changing landscape, and a modern renaissance of new technologies that are reshaping the socio-political world we live in today. During and after Graduate School he began teaching, developing classes that fused together contemporary theory, analog, hands-on art making, and digital tools and techniques in compositing, video and animation. Time, memory, and patterns of perception are recurring themes in his multimedia works that range from poetry, painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, sound and video installations. He has shown his work extensively in galleries, art centers and museums, and recently participated in an artist residency at Savage Wonder Art Center in Beacon, NY. Ayers currently lives in the Hudson Valley with his family, and teaches interdisciplinary courses at Parsons School Of Design.
